Launched in early 2011 the Unpackit website was to promote thinking around packaging, the choices people make in their purchasing and the cost to all of us in disposing of it.

The campaign included a competition with a nomination phase followed by voting on the “Best” and “Worst” packaging. I designed and implemented the initial WordPress theme with some ripped cardboard :-) I then moved in to constructing the voting page, with design by myself and Simon at Wastebusters, with a special focus on making it as easy as possible for people to vote. Using Jquery selection is a very simple image click and the page talks back to the server via Ajax removing the need for any page loading while doing some comprehensive security checks on the vote.

The results have been excellent with very high visitor conversion to votes and only one small bug (quickly fixed). I’m kinda tempted to turn it into a WordPress plugin if I get the time. There are already quite a few voting plugins but mostly they were too complex for our needs.
